Today I am proud to present the last part of my eagle owl series.
The following 30 shots were taken at night, on the one hand, and in the twilight or deep blue hour, on the other hand, in connection with a slight underexposure. This worked quite well when the eagle owl was already very slightly illuminated by the sky, but the habitat behind it was still or already in the dark - I liked this effect very much.
For the night shots, the one or other urban light source at the foot of the quarry helped me. Because even if the next lantern was further away, a little bit of light shone on the eagle owls in many places.
I was especially fascinated by the glow of the eyes in these sparse light conditions - the orange coloration really lights up at night. However, this part is usually reduced during the night, because the pupils of the animals dilate strongly in the darkness - but not always: No matter how much they sit in the dark - if they look in the direction of a light source, even in the middle of the night, the black pupils are smaller.
Technically, I also needed some frustration tolerance - the exposure time was quickly at 1/8 to 1/40 second. In 2 cases even at half a second, for that the eagle owls simply had to play along - and it went also only with mirror pre-release and stable base. Accordingly, in these lighting conditions the scrap was very high but there were still some very sharp images, which I would like to show you now.
With a view to the next few weeks, I'm also happy to photograph other motifs, where you also regularly return home with good yield - because, for example, in the last 4 photo sessions I have produced a total of just 1 image. Also in the middle of the "project", about after a good 20 days, I was on the verge of breaking off, because 5 times in a row no eagle owls showed up in adequate proximity. I was on the verge of not trying it 6 times, but fortunately I went through with it and was able to shoot most of this last night series.
I will definitely put aside my huge telephoto lens the next few weeks and I am already looking forward to the early autumn season in the heathland and on the small and lighter lenses 😅😉
